Estimated Time from Check-In to Departure

For women renting a casual kimono (komon), the total time from check-in to heading out is about 1 to 1.5 hours. This can vary based on how crowded the shop is, how long it takes to choose your kimono, swap bags, and complete your hair styling. For men, it usually takes about 20 to 40 minutes to get dressed. For women skipping hair styling, expect about 40 minutes to 1 hour. We recommend allowing extra time, especially during busy seasons. Afternoons tend to be less crowded on both weekdays and weekends.

Optional Accessories

At Waraku Arashiyama, we offer a wide selection of optional accessories to help you create your perfect kimono look—whether you’re going for something cute, elegant, or totally unique. From classic items to the latest trendy pieces, you can mix and match to suit your personal style. You can decide on accessories on the day of your rental, after checking them out in-store!

  • Han-eri (collar insert with embroidered or lace)
  • Obijime (Decorative Cord for Obi)
  • Heko Obi Sash
  • Tulle accessories
  • Obi-age (obi sash overlay)
  • Bags
  • Haori Jacket / Stole
  • Gloves

Optional Accessory Fees: About ¥550–¥1,100

Things to Keep in Mind When Renting a Kimono in Kyoto Arashiyama

Not Sure What’s Included in the Plan?

Some rental shops advertise “full set” plans, but essential items like bags or tabi socks might not actually be included. In some places, hair styling is an extra fee, or you may need to choose a more expensive plan to access popular kimono types like lace or antique styles. Many customers end up paying more than expected because of these hidden costs.

At Our Shop:
All of our plans are truly all-inclusive! Each plan includes: Kimono + Obi + Nagajuban (under-kimono) + Undergarments + Zori sandals + Tabi socks + Hair accessories + Purse + Kimono dressing + Hair styling + Free baggage storage. Everything you need for your kimono outing is included, so unless you choose to add optional accessories, there are no surprise fees. Also, you can freely choose any kimono, regardless of your selected plan—no upcharges for premium designs.

What Happens if You Stain or Damage the Kimono?

It’s common to accidentally stain your kimono with food or drinks, or get splashes from rainy weather. Many shops charge extra for cleaning or repairs in these cases, so it’s smart to choose a rental shop that offers damage coverage.

At Our Shop:
We offer an optional Kimono Protection Plan for just ¥330. This one-time insurance covers up to ¥20,000 worth of cleaning or repair costs for damage or stains to rented items, including accessories. Most of our guests opt for it, and we highly recommend it for peace of mind. We’ll explain everything during check-in!

What If You Can’t Return the Kimono on the Same Day?

Most rental shops require same-day returns, and late fees may be charged in 10-minute increments if you’re late. If you think you might run out of time, look for a rental shop that offers next-day returns.

At Our Shop:
We offer a Next-Day Return Option: ・¥1,100 for casual kimono ・¥3,300 for hakama or furisode Just bring the items back to our store by 12:00 noon the next day. Please show a valid photo ID at check-in to use this option (driver’s license, student ID, or health insurance card).
Note: You must select the next-day return at check-in—you cannot add it later. We do not accept postal returns.
